Dr. Barry French C.M.
Barry French has had an outstanding career as an aerospace instrumentation scientist. As a professor at the University of Toronto’s Institute for Aerospace Studies, he and his research group were involved in the development and calibration of the successful Project Viking Martian Atmosphere Mass Spectrometer. This expertise in atmospheric compositional measurements evolved into the first practical demonstrations of atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry, which, in turn, led to the founding of Sciex Inc., along with Bill Breukelman. As an academic and entrepreneur, Barry has long been an advocate of university and industry interactions and has served as such on provincial and federal advisory groups, most notably the Science Council of Canada. He has numerous publications, patents and awards, including membership in the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian medal. As one of the founders of Gedex, Barry has provided senior-level scientific input and advice that contributed to the company’s success.
